What am I gonna do?

Before I regained my sense of humor on Tuesday I received my invite for the Tour de Burg via email. My first response was "fuck,", but I did not reply with that since the email stated "send only your loftiest or lowliest of intentions... that means don’t reply unless you are saying ye intend!"

Those of you that follow my movements too closely might be wondering about the scheduling conflict with the BC Bike Race and that silly other contest I entered. You know, the contest that stopped taking entries forty days ago, but has yet to declare a winner?

At least the folks at Pink Bike are being thorough. While I still have hopes, dreams, and aspirations of going to BC Bike Race, I'm gonna have to start making plans to fill my vacuous summer hole that don't involve Garth Prosser. I have to do something to bring some positivity to my blog, or I will lose my stitchery readership altogether. I'm afraid I've already lost Alice... she doesn't even think I'm worth the bother.

See if I ever vote for her in some stitchery contest. You cut me deep, Alice.

So I scratch my head. To TdB or not TdB? Do I sign up for Breck Epic violating my "no third year in a row" stage race rule? Do I reduce my focus and concentrate solely on the all important Hoffencross 2011? Whatever I decide, you'll be the first to know. I thought about using cyclingnews.com as my media mouthpiece now that they have decided to not only mention me, but to lead a story with the regaling of my valiant stage three TSE efforts...

but I think all pertinent info shall be disseminated here as it always has been and should be.

Last night I went back to my typical Wednesday night routine. Over the last few weeks while The Pie was at yoga I had been riding around Charlotte trying to gain some fitness after work in preparation for the TSE. Now that I am directionless, the status quo is as it was before. Come home, grab a beer, sit in front of the computer, and stare across my bike room looking for something productive to do.

The Misfit diSSent Brontoawesomeous Meatplow V.5 was in pieces, covered in liquid latex (known as Stan's juice) and mud, with three tires in need of patching and a once over needed to check for other issues. The Superbeast had given up a tire, the seatpost had been borrowed by another racer (note to self: think it all the way through when you loan out a post to a guy who just broke a post), and I had promised to put the gears back on it after TSE.

I started with the Superbeast as it seemed to be the easiest problem to solve. As I stood there with a tool in one hand and a beer in the other I couldn't find it in my heart to put the gears back on. The bottom bracket was toast, so I was going to have to remove the crank anyways, but I still felt no love for the shifty bits that let me down last fall. The warranty rear derailleur will have to go untested just a bit longer. The Superbeast remains single, large and in charge.

With the time I saved by not putting gears on the Superbeast, I broke out the wash bucket and headed outside to scrub off three flats worth of latex out of the nooks and crannies of my trusty steed that served me so well in Pennsylvania. The bike is now clean and wheel-less, as I still need to find the holes in the three torn tires and patch them, but I ran out of interest with the project for the time being.

This weekend I will start making decisions regarding the rest of my summer. If you have any REALISTIC (or not) suggestions, feel free to share them. I am only registered for ORAMM and the Shenandoah 100 as of right now, and I am open to suggestions.

Maybe Rad Ross Schnell's 3 day All Mountain Enduro Race in Winter Park, CO on a rigid single speed? How about the Breck Epic 3 day followed up with the Schnell down-hell fest? Hmmm....

"Nasty?" Definitely! "Whiny?" In an entertaining way. "Old?" Sadly true. "Not worth the bother?" Fair enough. Alice may have a point....

I've got a better idea. Instead of entering contests to go to races, start a contest for your readers to select a race. Get your readers to describe (in so many words or less) which race you should undertake and why. Could select finalists and then have final votes, or skip the votes and you get to select. Promise the winner some schwag, maybe figgure a sponsor angle to have them pay your way to the most excellent race winner. Heck, you can massage the rules a bit so's you kind of get to pick the race you want.

How's about "The First Annual [sponsor's name here]Make Dicky Make Good Bike Race Contest" or sump'in.

We'd like to see you out here on the West Coast for the Tahoe Sierra 100. Race point to point old school style. Ride the Western States course.
