As Hootie would say, "Hold my Hamm's"

The final piece of my PMBAR puzzle almost fell into place last night.  I wanted to pick up a twelver of Hamm's, but I settled for something that was close enough.

Here's the thinking.

Last year when Zac and I found out that we were going to take a two hour penalty for failing the reading comprehension part of the race, we decided that chasing a three hour time bonus check point after losing two hours to a penalty was a terrible idea.  We would lose to all the teams that were smarter than us but up to two hours slower.  Seemed like a silly notion knowing that there was good beer at the finish line.

This year, there will be no finely crafted beer supplied by Pisgah Productions, and there will be no hurry to get into my eleven pack (I sampled one last night) of Schlitz.  Zac and I should be extra motivated to pay attention and go for all five checkpoints... assuming we don't screw up.

Operation Pack-less PMBAR is a go.  Zac and I have figured out a way to carry all our mandatory gear and stay hydrated for as long as necessary.  It may be a stupid plan, but this is my 9th PMBAR, so why not try something different.  The piece of hi-tech gear in the lower right of the image is the new Fönbag, which will be available to the public on Monday.

They have been wetted, sweated, and fully vetted with an actual phone stowed inside its supple interior, but I will not be carrying a phone in mine this weekend.  Instead, my gauze tape, lighter, whistle, emergency blanket, passport, and iodine are going to be neatly tucked away on the inside (with a spare blinkie dummy corded to the zipper pull).

Tomorrow morning, the random excitement begins at 8:00am.

Once again into the fray....

"You need a little hand, from a grown up friend."

Sounds creepy.

Now I'll have that crap stuck in my head all day.

Bastard.

Is there any different in the Clutch and the Back Forty, other than the ability to cut/shorten the clutch?

Which transports Schlitz better?

They are different. Check out the product descriptions:

I would use the Back Forty if you plan on running the normal load (tube, CO2, tools).

Schlitz is best left off the trail. If you can only bring one beer with you, I'd suggest a 16oz Torpedo.
